STILTON, HUNTINGDONSHIRE

Families connected to Stilton (HOWES) (STRANGWARD)

Stilton is a village on the edge of the Fens. Once a market town it gives its name to the famous Stilton Cheese produced in Leicestershire.

Postcard of Stilton - date unknown

The 17th Century Bell Inn was once an important staging post beside what was the Great North Road (Formerly the famous Roman Road Ermine Street) Farmers took their produce to the Inn for collection and delivery by coach to London. There were two other coaching inns The Angel and The Talbot.

My family connection to Stilton is that my 4 x Great Grandfather Thomas Strangward was born in Stilton but the family then moved to Spaldwick. Thomas's daughter Virtue Strangward lived in Stilton from the time of her marriage in 1833 to Robert Howes who was a Wheelwright in Stilton for over 30 years.
